Nobody is as rock ‘n’ roll as Chrissie Hynde. The former music journalist has daughters with Ray Davies (The Kinks) and Jim Kerr (Simple Minds). She is the driving force behind The Pretenders, the prototype of a rock band. She combines character and a good ear for a hit song. ‘Brass in pocket’ (1979) kicked off a wonderful string of sing-alongs. Just think of ‘Kid’, ‘Back on the chain gang’ and ‘Don’t get me wrong’. Hynde also has a gift for slow songs. ‘I’ll stand by you’ and ‘2000 miles’ are among the finest ballads of the 1980s. The Pretenders have a special connection with Werchter. The group was forced to cancel in 1981 and 1982 but finally took to the stage in 1987. Herman Schueremans received flowers and kisses from Hynde for TW's 10th anniversary. Two years ago - exactly 30 years later - The Pretenders performed at both Rock Werchter and TW Classic.
