Khruangbin is the Thai word for aeroplane and, since 2010, also the name of a wonderfully global band whose fans include Anderson. Paak, Iggy Pop and Korean pop star Lee Hyori. This Texan trio makes interesting instrumental music for the beaches of Los Angeles, the squares of Marrakesh and the nightlife of Bangkok. The story goes that they bonded over a shared love of Afghan music and eastern architecture. They first caught people’s attention while touring with Bonobo – some of it down to the zany wigs worn by guitarist Mark Speer and bassist Laura Lee. The real breakthrough came with their collaborations with the young soul god Leon Bridges. On ‘Texas Sun’ (2019) and ‘Texas Moon’ (2022) they pay tribute to the musical heritage of the American state where they both grew up.
